Following their assassination of Kiyomasa Kato, Azumi and Nagara, the only other surviving member of their original group, are being hunted down by Kanbei Inoue and his forces on behalf of his slain master. Among his hired forces are Kinkaku and his brother Ginkaku, who bears a striking resemblance to Azumi's fallen lover. The brothers defect to Azumi's side, and are also joined by the ninja Kozue. Together, they plan to kill the last of the warlords, Sanada Masayuki, to finish their final mission until Kozue begins to convince Nagara of the allure of a normal life that threatens the unity of the group.
